Bengal Weather Alert: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms in Kolkata and almost all districts of South Bengal on Thursday, May 22. The probability of thunderstorms is highest in six districts of South Bengal, including North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, West Midnapore and Jhargram. The weather department has sounded an orange alert for these districts. These areas are likely to be hit by gusty winds speeding to 30 to 60 kmph. Similar weather conditions are expected to prevail on Friday. Bengal’s capital Kolkata saw rainy conditions on Wednesday as well. The minimum temperature in Kolkata was 27.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, however, it dropped to 22.4 degrees on Thursday. Scattered thunderstorms are likely to continue across Bengal till next Sunday and Monday. According to IMD, there is a possibility of thunderstorms in eight districts of North Bengal on Thursday. Heavy rain will lash Darjeeling, Du Dinajpur and Malda.

"The east-west trough now runs from cyclonic circulation over Punjab and neighborhood to East Bangladesh across Haryana, North Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand and North Bengal & Sikkim at 0.9 km above mean sea level. Also, in presence of favourable wind pattern and moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, enhanced thunderstorm with gusty winds accompanied with heavy rainfall activity likely over some districts of West Bengal," IMD, Kolkata, said in its bulletin.
Warning for South Bengal
May 22: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph), lightning, heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) at one or two places very likely over Murshidabad and light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over Jhargram, West Midnapore, North & South 24 Parganas, Nadia districts of South Bengal.
Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts of South Bengal.
May 23: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over Purulia, West Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts of South Bengal.
Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts of South Bengal.
