Bengal Weather:  The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted rain and thunderstorms in several south Bengal districts including Kolkata from March 20, Thursday, bringing the much-needed respite from the recent high temperatures.

North Bengal, however, could have an extended dry period, the department expects. However, despite a partially overcast sky on Tuesday, minimum temperatures in several areas of north and south Bengal significantly dropped. The districts of Kolkata, Howrah, and Purba Medinipur had rain on Tuesday evening, providing a temporary break from the day's intense heat.

According to reports, there was a little increase in temperature in several parts of North Bengal.

Cooch Behar reported a minimum temperature of 15.6 degrees Celsius, while Darjeeling recorded a minimum of 11.6 degrees Celsius.

The highest recorded temperatures in Purulia and Kalimpong were 40.1 and 24.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Heatwave warnings were issued after recent temperatures in some south Bengal districts approached 40 degrees Celsius.

“Due to the presence of favourable wind pattern and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels, thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty winds are likely to occur in some districts of Bengal from March 20 to 22,” the department said.

Hailstorms Likely In THESE Districts

In Jhargram, Bankura, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, and Hooghly districts, there is a chance of lightning, hailstorms, and thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, the statement continued.

According to an official, thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall are expected to occur in a few locations throughout the districts of Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, Purba Bardhaman, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Purba Medinipur throughout the weekend.
