Bengaluru: The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) will be strict with the disconnections of power supply for consumers who fail to pay their electricity bills within 30 days of the due date, starting September 1. This move aligns with the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) guidelines, which require Escoms to disconnect the power supply if bills or additional security deposits are not paid within the specified time frame.
Previously, BESCOM allowed defaulters more time before taking action, but the company has now decided to tighten its enforcement, as per a TOI report. A statement from BESCOM clarified, "All domestic and commercial consumers, as well as apartments and those with temporary electricity connections, must ensure that their bills are paid within 30 days. Failure to do so will result in disconnection on the day of meter reading, which occurs within the first 15 days of every month."
Traditionally, BESCOM's power men (linemen) would visit the premises of defaulters after the meter reading cycle was completed. However, from now on, power men will accompany meter readers during their initial visit itself and immediately disconnect the power supply of consumers with overdue bills. Bescom provides consumers with a 15-day period to pay their electricity bills without any interest. An additional 15-day grace period is also given for payments with interest after the due date.

BESCOM officials explained that any unpaid bill above ₹100 would be considered a default, and the connection would be disconnected. In situations where consumers pay their bills online and the payment hasn't yet been updated in BESCOM's system, consumers are advised to show their payment receipt to the BESCOM staff to avoid disconnection.
This new measure aims to encourage timely payments and ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.
