Bengaluru’s civic body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has intensified its effort to recover pending property taxes from 3.49 lakh property owners whose taxes are due. The operation intends to target 1.73lakh chronic defaulters who collectively owe Rs 390 crore to BBMP. These chronic defaulters have skipped the taxe for multiple years while the other 1.76 lakh are defaulters for the current year.

According to Munish Moudgil, BBMP’s Special Commissioner (Revenue), out of a total of 20.5 lakh registered property owners, eligible to pay tax, a whopping 3.49 lakh property owners have failed to pay their dues.

Despite multiple attempts, including notices, SMS alerts, IVRS calls, personal calls, and attachment notices—many of these defaulters have deliberately avoided payment, BBMP said on X. The defaulters failed to grab the opportunity to pay tax in the one-time settlement scheme that allowed them to pay dues with some relief. The BBMP in its X post, further said that letting these defaulters go would be unjust to honest taxpayers and that the civic body will surely recover dues from them. “...Letting such citizens off is totally unfair to honest tax payer. Anyone speaking for these 10% chronic defaulters are standing against 90% honest tax payers and against public interest. BBMP is clear and determined to collect the property tax as per law,” BBMP further said in the X post.
