Bengaluru Metro: BEML Limited started the production of prototype driverless trains for Bengaluru Metro 's Blue and Pink lines.  The manufacturing of these Metro trainsets, part of the 5RS-DM Project, was inaugurated on Saturday at BEML's plant in Bengaluru. The first prototype train is expected to be delivered in early 2025, with BEML planning to supply two to three trains per month, completing the delivery by the end of 2026. 

BEML secured an order for 53 trainsets in August 2023, valued at Rs 3,177 crore, under the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2, 2A and 2B. This contract includes the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the trainsets, along with its maintenance services for up to 15 years. 

The trainsets, featuring a six-car formation, are entirely designed and developed by BEML’s in-house engineering teams in Bengaluru. Constructed from high-tensile austenitic stainless steel, the trains are built to ensure durability, safety and passenger comfort.  Each Metro car is equipped with two roof-mounted Saloon Air Conditioners for effective air-conditioning.

Additional features include an IP-based Passenger Announcement and Passenger Information System, along with a Passenger Saloon Surveillance System that provides real-time station information.The trains will also have electrically driven automatic doors synchronised with Platform Screen Doors.

As many as 16 trainsets will be deployed on the Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara-Nagavara) and Phase 2A (Silk Board Junction-KR Pura), while the remaining 21 trainsets will serve Phase 2B (KR Pura-Kempegowda International Airport). The Pink Line is anticipated to open by the end of 2025, with the Blue Line set to start operations by June 2026.
