A family from Karnataka tried to set themselves ablaze outside the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The eight members of the family, including women and children, tried to end their lives in front of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in a protest against a bank auctioning their house to recover loan dues.
The video of the incident showed that the family members poured kerosene on themselves, standing outside the assembly. However, police intervened in time, preventing any loss of life in the incident and detained the family members involved in the act.
The family had reportedly taken a loan of Rs 50 lakh from the Bangalore City Cooperative Bank in 2016 for ginger cultivation but suffered losses and could not repay the amount following which the family took the extreme step to end their lives.

The family claimed that the bank did not lower the interest rate despite assurance from Karnataka minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, as reported by India Today.
The family could repay only Rs 95 lakh and not the full dues including the interest and other components. Due to the family’s failure to repay the dues in other EMIs, the bank decided to auction their house to recover the dues, which drove the family to the extreme step.
