A 44-year-old farmer died by suicide after he was summoned to a police station in connection with a missing woman’s complaint in Hoskote taluk of Bengaluru Rural district, triggering allegations of police harassment by his family. The incident came to light on Wednesday, January 7.
According to News18, the deceased, identified as Manjunath, a resident of Mailapur village, was working as a farmer. According to family members, a woman from a neighbouring village had been employed at his farm and had gone missing four days earlier. Following her disappearance, her relatives lodged a complaint with the local police.
Family members alleged that after the complaint was filed, a police staffer named Ambarish contacted Manjunath and asked him to report to the police station. Though he was initially sent back home, he received another call the next day instructing him to bring the woman along. The family claimed that Manjunath became extremely distressed after the phone call and was later found hanging from a tree in his agricultural field.
Rejecting the suicide theory, the family alleged foul play, stating that a sweater and other items found at the scene did not belong to Manjunath. Deputy Superintendent of Police Mallesh visited the spot and carried out an inspection, after which the body was shifted to the Hoskote mortuary for post-mortem examination. The case has been registered at Hoskote Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
In a separate incident, a 24-year-old IT professional, Sujal Vinod Oswal, was found dead inside the premises of Tata Consultancy Services at Rajiv Gandhi IT Park, Hinjawadi Phase 3, Pimpri-Chinchwad, in the early hours of Tuesday.
Police said he locked himself inside a restroom after entering the office late at night and is suspected to have died by suicide. Authorities noted that he had messaged his family expressing distress over financial losses from online betting.
Hinjawadi police, led by DCP Vishal Gaikwad and Inspector Balaji Pandhare, reached the spot after staff alerted them. The body was sent for post-mortem, and an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered. Officials said preliminary findings point to severe mental stress due to debt, with further investigation ongoing to determine all circumstances surrounding the incident.
