Bengaluru News: A 57-year-old man took his own life by jumping in front of an oncoming train at the Doddakallasandra metro station in Bengaluru on Saturday. The event occurred around 5:45 pm, causing a disruption to the Green Line services, which were halted for several hours.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which operates the Namma Metro, took to social media platform X to confirm the incident. "A man of 57 years of age has committed suicide by jumping in front of the approaching train at Doddakallasandra Station at 17.45 hrs. The body has been removed by the police and taken to a hospital for post mortem. Further investigation is on," the corporation stated.
According to the police, the victim, known as Arora, is survived by his wife and a daughter, though he was living separately from his spouse. The reasons behind his decision remain unclear at this stage, as authorities continue to investigate the matter.
The incident caused a disruption to the metro services, with the route between Yelachenahalli and Silk Institute stations being halted for several hours. This resulted in numerous passengers being left stranded, and also contributed to a massive traffic congestion on the Kanakapura main road, according to several commuters.
A senior BMRCL official, as quoted by the New Indian Express, said that the driver of the train was unable to stop in time and the train passed over the victim, who was unaccompanied when he jumped onto the tracks. "This is a case of death by suicide," the official stated.
According to the Indian Express report, the body of the deceased was reportedly lying on the tracks until around 7:30 pm, as the authorities waited for the police and forensic teams to complete their investigations before metro operations could resume.
The BMRCL later updated on social media that the train services had been suspended between Yelachenahalli and Silk Institute stations, while the remaining section of the network was operational.
