Bengaluru News: A 30-year-old Bengaluru resident, who was facing allegations of dowry harassment following his wife’s suicide, died by suicide at a hotel in Nagpur early Saturday. The incident occurred two days after his wife’s death and after the family left Bengaluru citing fear and threats.

The deceased has been identified as Suraj Shivanna, a franchise owner of an online delivery service. Police said Suraj travelled nearly 1,000 km with family members before the incident.

Journey Before The Incident

According to police, the family left Bengaluru on December 25. They briefly halted in Hyderabad and reached Nagpur on Friday evening. Two rooms were booked at a hotel around 9.30 PM.

Suraj was found hanging in the hotel room around 12.30 AM by his mother, Jayanti, aged 60. In shock, she also attempted suicide but survived after the noose snapped. Her cries alerted hotel staff and family members.

Suraj was rushed to AIIMS-Nagpur, where doctors declared him dead.

Family Alleges Threats After Wife’s Suicide

Suraj’s elder brother, Sanjay Shivanna, lodged a police complaint. He told police that the family fled Bengaluru due to alleged threats from Suraj’s in-laws after an FIR was registered against him for dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.

Marriage and Events Leading Up To FIR

Suraj had married Ganavi, an MBA graduate, on October 29. Family sources said she was hesitant about the marriage and had been persuaded by a relative.

The couple went on a honeymoon to Sri Lanka but returned early after disagreements. After returning to Bengaluru:

  • Attempts to resolve issues failed

  • Ganavi left for her father’s home

  • She died by suicide a few hours later

Her family then filed a complaint alleging dowry harassment.

Family Denies Dowry Allegations

Speaking to police, Sanjay denied all dowry-related claims. He said no demands were made and that Suraj’s family bore the wedding expenses.

Police said Suraj’s post-mortem report is awaited. Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
