Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike: Starting February 2026, Bengaluru metro commuters are expected to face automatic fare hikes of up to 5 per cent following recommendations from the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC). This comes after the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) imposed a massive fare increase of 71.43 per cent in February 2025, making Bengaluru Metro the most expensive metro system in the country.
The committee, led by retired Justice R Tharani, submitted its report in December 2024. According to the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002, the BMRCL is bound to implement the committee’s recommendation. This annual fare revision is a first for Bengaluru Namma Metro, aiming to help maintain the financial stability of the corporation, Deccan Herald reported.
Bengaluru Metro Revised Fare Structure And Annual Caps: Check Details
- The corporation had initially proposed a steep fare hike of 105.15 per cent (around 14.02% per year before discounts), which would have raised fares to Rs 21 (minimum) and Rs 123 (maximum).
- The FFC recommended a smaller increase of 51.5 per cent (approximately 6.87 per cent annually since 2017), setting the new fare slab to Rs 10 (minimum) and Rs 90 (maximum).
- In addition to this, the committee approved the BMRCL’s proposal for automatic annual fare hikes, but capped the revisions at 5 per cent per year.
- The fare revision will be calculated through a transparent formula based on the changes in operational and maintenance costs.
- According to the report, fares will be rounded off to the nearest rupee, like a Rs 10 ticket would increase to Rs 11 after a 5 per cent hike.
- The first automatic fare revision of the Bengaluru Metro is scheduled for February 2026, exactly one year after the previous fare hike.
