Bengaluru Namma Metro: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has criticised the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for floating tenders for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the expansion of Metro services till Tumakuru. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Surya asserted that the state government should have developed the suburban rail project to improve the regional connectivity. Earlier on Monday, the BMRCL stated that the extension of the Green Line will severely benefit the commuters by cutting the travel time. While currently the Green Line operates between Madavara and Silk Institute, the 59.6-km-long corridor will extend the services to Tumakuru.

Tejasvi Surya, in his post, emphasised that while boosting the connectivity till Tumakuru is crucial, the government should have focused on the long-pending rail project. "Tumakuru needs world class connectivity to Bengaluru. No doubt. But is metro the right option? Building a metro to Tumakuru is an urban planning nightmare. The exorbitant cost involved to build it just does not make sense – this is what we have suburban trains for," Surya stated in his post.

"But instead of developing the long-pending suburban rail & improving connectivity to Tumakuru, the Congress Govt once again wants to spend crores on preparing a DPR for a metro project that will take years and years to see fulfilment. Think about it. The metro’s average operating speed is around 34 km/h, making it similar to a bus for long inter-city journeys," the Bengaluru South MP added.

Earlier in May, the state government had approved the feasibility report for the corridor under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The BMRCL officials informed that the metro route will become Karnataka's first intercity metro project. The officials also stated that the BMRCL has set the deadline of November 20 for the interested parties to submit their bids.
