Bangalore Namma Metro Project Phase 2: BEML Limited, a state-run company under the Ministry of Defence, has received an additional order worth Rs 405 crore from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). Under this contract, BEML will manufacture and deliver seven driverless metro trains (42 cars) for the Bangalore Metro Phase 2 corridor. This new order extends the existing partnership between BEML and BMRCL, further strengthening Bangalore’s urban transport network.
This new agreement is an extension of contract 5RS-DM, which was initially awarded to BEML in August 2023 after fierce global competition. The original contract, valued at Rs 3,177 crore, covers the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of trainsets, along with comprehensive maintenance services for 15 years.
Previously, BEML was tasked with delivering 53 metro trains (318 cars). With the latest order, the total number of metro cars supplied will increase to 60 trains (360 cars). BEML has been a crucial partner in Bangalore’s metro expansion, serving as the largest rolling stock provider to BMRCL.
Advanced Driverless Metro Trains: Key Features
The new metro cars will feature driverless technology, representing a major step toward a smarter and more efficient urban transit system. These advanced trains will have a six-car configuration, constructed using high-tensile Austenitic stainless steel to enhance durability, passenger safety, and comfort.
Each car will be equipped with two roof-mounted Saloon Air Conditioners, ensuring a comfortable travel experience for passengers.
What Are Driverless Metro Trains?
Driverless metro trains, as the name suggests, operate without human intervention, using automated systems to navigate the tracks. This cutting-edge technology improves efficiency, enhances passenger safety, and sets new standards for urban transportation.
Technological Upgrades for Passenger Comfort and Safety
The new driverless metro trains will be equipped with advanced passenger information and safety systems, including:
- IP-based Passenger Announcement (PA) and Passenger Information System (PIS): Provides real-time station updates for better communication with passengers.
- Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS): Ensures enhanced security with constant monitoring.
- LCD-based Dynamic Route Map Display: Offers clear, real-time navigation and route information.
- Electrically Driven Automatic Doors: These doors will be synchronized with Platform Screen Doors to improve safety during boarding and alighting.
BEML, a 'Schedule A' company, plays a crucial role in supporting India’s key sectors like Defence, Rail, Mining, and Construction by providing cutting-edge technology and high-quality products. The company’s continued collaboration with BMRCL highlights its commitment to modernizing public transportation and improving urban mobility.
