Bengaluru Metro Updates: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is providing a boost to its Phase 3 development with the construction of the much-awaited Red Line. The roadmap to construct the Red Line is seen as a step to enhance Bengaluru's mass rapid transit system. The BMRCL has designed the latest metro route to connect Hebbal and Sarjapur through a 36.59-kilometer corridor. The Red Line is expected to provide a great convenience to the residents of several regions by cutting travel time and reducing the traffic congestion.
The BMRCL officials stated that the new alignment will provide relief to the residents of several key regions, including Koramangala, St. John’s, Madiwala, Dairy Circle, KR Circle, Golf Course, and Mekhri Circle. They further stated that these regions are not effectively connected with the metro currently, leading to traffic congestion in the peak hours. However, they assured that the Red Line will help in reducing the traffic congestion and will provide convenience.
While providing details, they stated that 28 new metro stations will be established between the northern and southeastern ends of the city to improve the connectivity. They informed that the central and state governments have already given their permission to commence the work for this route.
While the survey of the route has been completed, the land acquisition process is underway. They stated that the construction work is expected to begin within a year, adding that the total estimated cost for the project is approximately Rs 28,405 crore.
The officials stated that the Red Line includes a mix of 14.45 kilometers of underground tunnels and 22.14 kilometers of elevated tracks. The new arrangement is likely to serve as a crucial addition to the city's existing metro network. While the current network covers east-west and north-south corridors, the Red Line will connect the remaining areas.
