Bengaluru: The State government has released a new set of notifications revising the names of 14 wards and redrawing the boundaries of six others across five city corporations. These changes come after objections surfaced over certain ward names and concerns were raised about boundary discrepancies in the earlier lists.
The issue gained attention after Yelahanka MLA S.R. Vishwanath opposed naming a ward Aakash. The ward is now renamed Aerocity. Yelahanka Old Town has been redesignated Raja Kempegowda Ward, while the earlier Raja Kempegowda Ward has returned to its original name, Chowdeshwari Ward.
Revisions Follow Public Pushback
Renaming of wards under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has triggered debate, as ward names often reflect local history, culture and community identity. Residents and representatives flagged several objections immediately after the GBA notified 368 wards on September 30, later finalised as 369 wards on November 19. Despite the final list, further changes were made on Monday, prompting renewed questions about the process.
Concerns were raised not only about nomenclature but also about how neighbourhoods were divided across ward boundaries. Many pointed out that certain localities had been separated from their natural clusters. This led the government to adjust boundaries of four wards in the South Corporation and two in the Central Corporation.
Bengaluru News: Multiple Ward Names Revised Across Corporations
In its corrigendum, the GBA announced name changes for 13 wards. The East Corporation recorded the highest number of modifications with six renamed wards, followed by three wards each in the North and West Corporations and one in the South. The Central Corporation did not see any changes.
One of the most debated names was Aakash Ward in the North Corporation. Critics questioned whether the name had political links, prompting its change to Aerocity Ward. GBA officials clarified that the original name referenced nearby aviation facilities but agreed to revise it in light of public objections.
Another significant update involved Ward No. 03, which reverted from Raja Kempegowda Ward back to Chowdeshwari. Meanwhile, Yelahanka Old Town Ward has been officially named Raja Kempegowda to honour the founder of Bengaluru.
The East Corporation also saw the retention of Bharat Aikya Ward, previously listed as Bharat Jodo before revisions. A senior minister acknowledged that naming new wards is complex and said the government aims to reflect cultural history and honour prominent personalities through these selections.
