Bengaluru News: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to host a ‘Festival of Dogs’ on October 17, aiming to celebrate the bond between humans and their canine companions. The event will bring together Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and animal caretakers from across the city to share heartwarming stories about street dogs.

In a recent press statement, Suralkar Vikas Kishor, Special Commissioner of Health at BBMP, highlighted the often negative perception of dogs, which tends to focus on dog bites and fears of attacks. He stated that most dogs are loyal, obedient, protective and serve as wonderful companions for humans. “While preventive measures to manage conflicts are important, we want to celebrate and highlight the positive contributions of dogs to society,” he stated.

According to The Hindu report, the BBMP believes that harmonious coexistence with animals is essential for maintaining ecological balance. In addition to promoting animal birth control and vaccinations, understanding animal behaviour and accepting them as part of nature is crucial, according to the release.

To further this initiative, the BBMP, in partnership with the Sahavarthin Animal Welfare Trust and other interested organisations, plans to launch several projects under the #BITEFREELOCALITY campaign. These projects aim to create “coexistence champions” who will work towards fostering a humane environment for animals.

On the same day as the festival, the BBMP will initiate a pilot project to feed community dogs. Pourakarmikas from four wards will help coordinate with local restaurants to provide leftover food to dogs. “As the project develops, we will enhance the connection between restaurants and caretakers to ensure that dogs receive consistent meals every day,” added Kishor.

For those interested in volunteering for upcoming initiatives, registration is open. Individuals can scan a provided code, fill out a form and submit it before October 15, 2024. For further inquiries, the public can contact the BBMP at 1533.
