A 20-year-old woman in Bengaluru lost a hefty Rs 2.5 crore of her family's money to her boyfriend after he blackmailed her of releasing some of their intimate videos on the internet. The boyfriend promised the girl a long-term commitment and used to make intimate videos, claiming that it was just for his personal interest. The victim finally approached police after being blackmailed for months and giving him jewelry, expensive watches, and even a car.
Police have arrested Mohan Kumar, the accused, and informed that he and the victim used to go to the same school and were good friends. They lost touch after the school but met again after several years and ended up falling in love. Meanwhile, they dated for a while and got closer in a few months. The woman started trusting Kumar because of his gesture and words.
Kumar later promised the woman that he had planned their future and he would marry her in the upcoming years. Upon getting comfortable with him, the woman started going on trips with her. Kumar made video of several of their intimate moments, assuring her that she must not worry as he was shooting the videos for himself.
The accused even ensured that his face was not visible in the video, and then he started using those specific videos to blackmail the woman. He used to say that he would be uploading the videos on social media sites unless he was given money. Initially, he took money in bits and pieces, and then his demands increased over time.
The woman then secretly withdrew Rs 1.25 crore from her grandmother's account and transferred it to the accounts given by Kumar. She also gave him cash worth Rs 1.32 crore on multiple occasions. She also provided him expensive watches, jewelry, and a luxury car and transferred money to his father's account many times.
"When Kumar continued to make demands, the victim gathered the courage to approach the police and file a complaint. Mohan Kumar has been arrested," an official was quoted as saying by NDTV. The police also confirmed that this was a well-planned crime, and police have already recovered Rs 80 lakh out of the extorted Rs 2.57 crore.
