Bengaluru News: A 21-year-old man caused a brief disruption to the Purple Line of the Namma Metro on Tuesday by pressing the Emergency Trip System (ETS) button for no valid reason. The incident, which occurred at MG Road station, halted the arriving train from Trinity station for 10 minutes, leading to widespread delays.

The individual, identified as Hemant Kumar, a resident of Vivek Nagar, was tracked down by metro staff using CCTV footage. After the train resumed service, he exited at Cubbon Park station, where staff approached him to inquire about his actions. During questioning, Hemant admitted that he presses the ETS for fun, according to Times Of India report.

A representative from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) stated, “The regulations say that using the ETS without a legitimate reason incurs a fine of Rs 5,000. When we asked him to pay the fine, he claimed he had no money. We then contacted his parents, who came to the station, settled the fine and took him home.”

The Emergency Trip System is designed to cut off the electricity supply to the tracks during emergencies, such as when a passenger falls onto the tracks or during maintenance activities. There have been previous instances where the ETS was activated for genuine emergencies, including when a child fell onto the track while playing.
