Bengaluru News: In an effort to reduce traffic congestion and promote public transport use among tech professionals, a new smart card called the Orbit Wallet RuPay prepaid card has been launched for employees working in Electronics City, Bengaluru.

The initiative is part of a collaboration between the Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA), Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) and World Resources Institute (WRI) India, with support from Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). The project falls under the Station Access and Mobility Program (STAMP), a campaign designed to encourage sustainable travel choices through technology and behavioural incentives.

According to a New Indian Express report, the Orbit Wallet card is one of the winning ideas from the STAMP Nudge Challenge. The card is National Common Mobility Card (NCMC)-compliant, which means users can eventually use it across multiple transport modes including Metro, BMTC buses and even for everyday digital transactions.

Currently, the card is active only for Metro rides, while the integration process with BMTC is still underway. Once completed, the same card will enable cashless travel across both services.

Srinivas Alavilli, Fellow for Integrated Transport at WRI India, said the main objective is to reward commuters for choosing eco-friendly travel. Employees using the Orbit Wallet in Electronics City will receive benefits worth Rs 1,500 as an incentive to switch from cars to Metro travel, he said.

Co-founder of Orbit Wallet, Shikha Chouksey, explained that the system also allows companies to redirect fuel and parking reimbursements toward sustainable mobility options. “This way, employees can earn perks for adopting greener commuting habits,” she added.

Officials believe the initiative will not only reduce private vehicle usage but also help build a more connected and sustainable transport network in Bengaluru.
