In a major act towards community awareness to deal with garbage situation, the Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) on Sunday did a big cleanliness drive and collected 599 tonnes of waste from seven areas of the city on Saturday.

The cleanliness drive started at 10:00 AM and went on for 8 hours till 6:00 PM. During the drive, the BNCC covered 95 kilometres of roads in places like Hebbal, Pulikeshinagar, Sarvagnanagar, Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Dasarahalli, and Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

During the drive, more than 4,200 volunteers and municipal workers contributed in cleaning the city. As part of the drive, as many as 69 tractors, 70 small garbage vehicles, and 5 big JCB machines were deployed to finally collect nearly 600 tonnes of waste.

Among the total waste removed, 275 tonnes were construction waste, 28 tonnes were home waste, 86 tonnes were empty plots, and 210 tonnes were dry waste.

Apart from municipal workers and volunteers, many government departments, including police, and local people also joined in to make the city clean.

To recognise and appreciate the work done, the BNCC announced prizes for the cleanest areas. As per the announcements, Sarvagnanagar won the first prize of Rs 1 lakh, followed by Byatarayanapura and Yelahanka, which got Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.

The BNCC Commissioner, Pommala Sunil Kumar, said the goal of the exercise was to raise awareness among both people and workers and keep Bengaluru clean and green.

Reacting to the development, the ruling party, Congress, said, "Sarvagnanagar Shines, Bengaluru Cleans Up! Under the Congress Government, Bengaluru’s cleanliness mission is delivering real results!
