The Bengaluru police on Saturday registered an investigation against a professor, who is alleged to have called a student a "terrorist." The incident took place during a lecture on March 26. 

The professor’s name is Muralidhar Deshpande, and he was suspended the day prior as a result of public backlash over his behaviour; also, all relevant authorities have opened a thorough and comprehensive inquiry into all aspects of this event. The Vice-Chancellor of the local university has also initiated an internal investigation, stating that subsequent events will be based upon the findings.

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms. In the video, the professor could be heard saying, "Sharm nahi aati, tumko (Do you feel no shame)."

"I thought I would be very calm today," the professor added.

The student alleges that the professor, throughout the entire class/lecture, targeted his religion and called him a ‘terrorist’ 13 times.  The remarks were also said to include references to ongoing global conflicts and certain political figures. Some students claimed they were suspended after protesting against the professor’s behaviour.

“We have booked the professor under BNS Sections 299 and 352 on Saturday. We are in the process of collecting all evidence related to the incident,” HT quoted Inspector Satheesh Kumar.

“We registered a suo motu case after a video of the purported incident went viral on social media. So far, no one has come forward to file a formal complaint,” he said, adding that they would summon the professor for questioning on Sunday.
