Bengaluru Viral News: A brief post by a Bengaluru resident on X (formerly Twitter) has unexpectedly gone viral, triggering a larger discussion around language, identity and changing neighbourhoods in the city.
The user wrote, "Spoke Kannada in Marathahalli and people can’t believe it lmao.” Though simple, the post quickly gained attention and invited reactions from locals familiar with the area’s linguistic mix.
One person replied, “It can be renamed to Teluguhalli,” while another added, “Once you cross Silk Board, you need to forget Kannada.”
Marathahalli, located in eastern Bengaluru, is known for its large migrant population, with many residents from neighbouring states. It has become a hub for IT professionals, resulting in a multilingual environment.

“There are more outsiders than locals in Marathahalli. That’s why they couldn’t believe you spoke Kannada,” one user commented.
However, not everyone agreed. “It’s a myth that Marathahalli is filled only with Telugus,” one post read.

“Even dogs and cats speak Telugu there,” someone joked. Another user added, “Speak Telugu and everything will be normal.”
A user wrote, “I made all my Telugu friends learn Kannada! Yes, they speak Kannada. But still I don’t feel—it’s a myth that Marathahalli is filled with Telugus!!”
The online exchange extended to comparisons with other localities. “In North Bangalore, auto drivers start with Kannada. In HSR Layout, they begin with Hindi. HSR is basically a mini Noida,” a user noted.
