Bengaluru News: Police have arrested a 25-year-old carpenter named Yellappa in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl. The crime reportedly took place on Wednesday afternoon while the victim's family was away from their home in Tavarekere, located on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
According to police reports, the girl was home alone when Yellappa, believed to be under the influence of marijuana, allegedly assaulted her. He is accused of hitting her head with a gas cylinder, which ultimately led to her death. The girl’s elder brother found her unconscious near the kitchen upon returning home for lunch.

CCTV footage from nearby buildings shows a man leaving the house and placing a gas cylinder onto his motorbike. Investigators noted that the main door of the house was intact, suggesting that the assailant was known to the family. Authorities are currently interviewing family members to gather more details about the incident.
The victim, who had dropped out of Class 6, had moved to Bengaluru with her family from Koppal district approximately 18 months ago. Following the discovery of her body, her parents filed a complaint at the Tavarekere police station, prompting a murder investigation. The police are awaiting results from the postmortem to confirm whether sexual assault occurred before her death.
The New Indian Express report cited Police Superintendent R. Srinivas Gowda as stating that, Yellappa had been observing the girl for several days prior to the incident. He was apprehended later that night after police reviewed the CCTV footage. In a further twist, it was revealed that Yellappa had stolen a motorcycle the night before to reach the girl's home.
A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
