Bengaluru News: A 22-year-old college student died in a road accident in North Bengaluru on Monday after her scooter skidded while she attempted to avoid a pothole. The victim, identified as Dhanushree, was a second-year B.Com student.
Police said she lost control of her vehicle while trying to dodge a deep pothole and fell onto the road. A tipper lorry coming from behind ran over her, killing her on the spot. The driver fled without stopping. The impact was severe, with her head crushed under the truck’s wheels, according to initial reports.
An FIR has been filed in the hit-and-run case and efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver. Her body was shifted to a private hospital after the accident.
The incident has once again highlighted Bengaluru’s pothole menace, which has been a longstanding safety concern for commuters. It comes weeks after the Karnataka government promised strict action on road repair delays.
On August 27, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed civic officials to fill all potholes across the city within 30 days. He had also suspended an assistant executive engineer after finding poor-quality repair work, where a pothole was filled only with gravel instead of proper materials.
The Chief Minister had warned that commissioners and chief engineers of the five city corporations would be held responsible for lapses. He also pointed out that ongoing white topping work on Hennur Road is being carried out at a cost of Rs 13 crore per kilometre for a 5 km stretch.
