Bengaluru News: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has announced plans for a new 1.5-km tunnel in Bengaluru that will connect Nagavara to the University of Agricultural Sciences. The tunnel will also pass via Esteem Mall, offering improved connectivity in the northern part of the city.
Speaking during his visit to the under-construction Hebbal flyover loop on Tuesday, Shivakumar clarified that this new tunnel is separate from the larger tunnel road project currently under discussion. He said the proposal is aimed at easing traffic congestion in the area.
According to The Hindu report, during the inspection, he also confirmed that the Hebbal flyover loop connecting KR Puram to the city centre will be opened before August 15, depending on the Chief Minister’s availability. He added that while this loop will open soon, the Airport service road-to-city loop will become operational at a later stage.
The flyover loop project was launched by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) in 2024 to ease the heavy traffic flow on the Hebbal flyover, especially for vehicles entering the city from the airport. Originally scheduled for completion in October 2024, the project has faced repeated delays due to challenges in obtaining permissions and implementation on the ground.
Officials now hope that the opening of this loop will bring some relief to daily commuters.
