Bengaluru Railway News: In good news for the residents of Bengaluru, the city is likely to get a new railway terminal to ease the bustling railway network. The Ministry of Railways has permitted a Final Location Survey (FLS) for the proposed Mega Coaching Terminal near Devanahalli, The New Indian Express reported.
The survey will be conducted along the Yelahanka-Devanahalli-Chikkaballapur corridor as the new terminal has been decided to be built at location along the corridor.
What necessitated new terminus?
Bengaluru has a wide railway network with a total footfall of 212.06 million in FY25. To facilitate them, the fifth most populous metro city has only three terminals and 12 pit lines. These along handle 140 originating and 138 terminating services, along with 142-pass-through trains on a daily basis. Bengaluru also manages 110 primary maintenance trains.
With such a vast demand, the existing terminals - Yeshwanthpur, KSR Bengaluru, and SMVT Bengaluru - are already accommodating trains at full capacity.
As the city expects a rise in the number of originating trains, a new terminal is unavoidable.
Estimated Cost, details of terminal
As per the Deccan Herald report, the project is estimated to cost around Rs 1,500 crore. The proposed Mega Coaching Terminal is likely to spread over 1,000 acres, and have at least 16v platforms, 10 pit lines, 4 full-length shunting necks, 2 run-through lines, and 2 coach maintenance lines.
Moreover, reports also suggest that the terminal will have five washing lines, 24 stabling lines, two pit wheel lathe lines, six heavy repair bay lines, and six sick lines, along with support infrastructure like loco bays, a 50-tonne boot laundry, administrative buildings, and stores.
The terminal is part of the Railway Board Directorate's nationwide initiative to build similar facilities across the country.
