Bengaluru News: Karnataka’s ongoing traffic fine discount drive has seen not only ordinary citizens but also top political leaders clearing long-pending dues. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and state BJP president BY Vijayendra recently paid off penalties linked to their official vehicles.

Records show that Siddaramaiah’s official Toyota Fortuner had seven violations flagged between January and August 2024. Six of these were for not wearing a seatbelt, while one was for speeding. The offences were captured by the city’s Intelligent Traffic Management System.

According to a Indian Express report, the CM was seated in the passenger seat during the seatbelt violations. Using the 50 per cent waiver offered by the government, the Chief Minister’s office paid Rs 2,500 to close the cases. Bengaluru Traffic Police confirmed that the dues were settled as per regular procedure, with no special consideration given.

Similarly, BJP state president BY Vijayendra cleared 10 fines connected to his vehicle. The violations included speeding, signal jumping and not wearing seatbelts. Some cases dated back to 2020. His office paid Rs 3,250 after applying the discount.

The state-wide fine reduction scheme, open from August 23 to September 12, was launched to address nearly three crore pending traffic cases from 2019 to 2025. These cases together amount to about Rs 1,000 crore. The response from the public has been strong. By Saturday, more than 16.2 lakh cases had been settled, with authorities collecting Rs 45.5 crore in fines.
