Two first-year BSc Nursing students were run over by a speeding Vande Bharat Express near the Chikkabanavara railway station on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Sunday, November 23. The incident left both victims dead on the spot, with their bodies severely dismembered on the tracks. 

According to the Government Railway Police, Karnataka, the deceased were identified as Sterlin Eliza Shaji, aged 19 and Justin Joseph, aged 20. Both hailed from the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. 

“The incident left the two dead on the spot, with their mangled bodies sprawled on the tracks. Police were yet to establish if the incident was an accident or death by suicide. CCTV footage is being examined,” a senior railway police officer from Bengaluru investigating the matter said, quoted the Deccan Herald.

When Did The Accident Take Place?

According to officials investigating the matter, the tragic incident took place at 2:35 PM when the Bengaluru-Belagavi Vande Bharat Express was en route to Belagavi. Preliminary reports indicate that both students were returning to their paying guest accommodation after having lunch when the incident took place. 

The impact of the train was so severe that both students died on the spot. Officers from the Bengaluru Railway Police and the Yeshwanthpur Railway Police Station have filed a case of unnatural death report. Officials are trying to gather information about the students’ movements and backgrounds.  

Railway department authorities have also begun an internal inspection into the circumstances leading up to the incident. The bodies have been shifted to MS Ramaiah Hospital. Police have also informed the families of both the deceased, who are currently travelling to Bengaluru.

Private Airline Pilot Booked 

In a separate incident, a 60-year-old pilot from a private aviation firm has been booked for allegedly raping a 26-year-old cabin crew member on November 18 at a hotel in Bengaluru. The accused, identified as Rohit Saran, and the victim later approached the Begumpet police station, where a First Information Report (FIR) was registered.
