The revised electoral roll published by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ahead of the upcoming civic body polls has revealed names of over 11 lakh fictitious voters. The findings come at a time when Shiv Sena and INC-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are mounting their criticism against state poll bodies for alleged irregularities in the voter list, including duplicate and bogus entries and concerns over potential vote theft.
According to the revised voter list, a total of 11,01,505 duplicate voter entries have been identified in the city. Around 1,00,000 names appeared at three to four different locations. However, the names of the fictitious voters are spread unevenly across the city.
According to BMC data, Mumbai currently has a total of 10,344,315 registered voters. Of these, 5,516,707 are male voters and 4,826,509 are female voters. Within this overall electorate, the presence of more than 11 lakh duplicate entries has raised serious concerns regarding the accuracy and reliability of the rolls. The State Election Commission and the BMC now have to shoulder the responsibility of providing a clean voter roll, as well as ensure that the effect of the dubious voter list do not reflect on the forthcoming municipal elections.
BMC Polls: Areas With Highest Number Of Dubious Voters
Amongst all the places, the western suburbs of the city account for the highest number of fictitious voters, followed by the eastern part of the city. The western suburbs contain 4,98,597 voters, while the eastern suburbs have 3,29,216 voters. Meanwhile, the island city has 2,73,692 dubious entries.
BMC Polls: Registered Voters
Coming to the number of registered voters of the city, here is an approximate amount:
- R (Central) Ward: 61,361 registered voters are in Ward number 15 covering the Borivali area.
- K (West) Ward: 61,518 voters in Ward number 66 covering Andheri West, Jogeshwari West, and Vile Parle West
- N Ward: 62,014 voters in Ward number 131 covering Ghatkopar
- L Ward: 60,094 voters in Ward number 164
- Other Wards: Roughly 60,000 registered voters are in each ward
When Will BMC Polls Take Place?
The exact date of the BMC polls is not out as of now. However, the court had given the directive that the polls need to be completed by 31st January 2026. The last date for filing objections and suggestions regarding entries in the electoral roll is November 27.
