Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) on Wednesday stated that Bengaluru residents will experience a hike in water tariffs from April 10. The officials stated that the step will not affect the common people, further describing the hike as "luxury usage". They stated that the recent changes are aimed at targeting high-end consumption, informing that the residents will be charged up to Rs 1 paisa per litre. The BWSSB officials assured that while the essential water use will remain affordable, excessive water consumption will get costly.
"Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to revise water tariffs with the intent of ensuring financial sustainability while minimizing the burden on the common citizen. An official order notifying the new rates will be issued on April 10," BWSSB Chairman Dr Ram Prasath Manohar was quoted as saying by India TV.
While declaring the new charges for the domestic users, the officials stated that while the residents will be charged 0.15 paise per litre for use of 0 to 8,000 litres per month, they will have to pay 0.40 paise per litre for use of 8,001 to 25,000 litres per month. They further stated that for the use of 25,001 to 50,000 litres per month, the residents will be charged 0.80 paise per litre, adding that 1 paisa per litre will be charged for use above 50,000 litres per month.
Apart from this, the authority also announced the hiked charges for high-rise apartments. They stated that the residents will be charged 0.30 paise per litre for the use of up to 2 lakh litres per month. The officials further stated that for the use of 2 to 5 litres per month, the residents will be charged 0.60 paise per litre, adding that the residents will be charged 1.00 paise per litre for the use of 5 to 10 lakh litres per month.
They stated that while most of the households will experience a minimal increase of Rs 20-30 per month, the commercial users are likely to experience a hike of Rs 50-60.
