Bengaluru has been witnessing an upsurge in Dengue cases since the month of April this year. However, allaying the fears in the capital city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has informed that relevant mitigation measures are in place to keep the situation under control. In the first three months of the year, only 257-315 dengue positive cases were reported, but the number jumped to 570 in April and 360 in the first 15 days of this month, as per a TOI report.
Dr Sujatha S, in charge of the National Vector-Borne Disease Control (NVBDC) at BBMP, reported approximately 360 cases within the past 15 days within BBMP limits. Suralkar Vikas Kishor, the special commissioner of health and family welfare at BBMP, reassured the citizens regarding the sudden spike in cases, terming the cause to be the changing temperatures, adding that it is a normal occurrence and there's no cause for alarm.
"With the sudden change in temperature, the cases have gone up. But this is normal and there's no need to panic," said Suralkar Vikas Kishor.
He elaborated the proactive measures being taken, including alerting teams to remove larvae-infested sites with the arrival of rain in Bengaluru. Aedes mosquitoes, responsible for dengue, breed in stagnant freshwater in environments such as containers, construction areas, households and apartments. Source reduction efforts and awareness programmes have commenced in anganwadis, colleges, and other public areas across the city to tackle the spread of the disease.
The official further informed that the East, South, and Mahadevapura zones are reporting the highest number of cases due to poor hygiene and excess garbage waste dumping areas. Tilak Nagar, Thyagarajanagar, Manorayanapalya, JC Nagar, Domlur, and Jogupalya were also affected.
BBMP chief health officer Dr Syed Sirajuddin Madani said that they have initiated the process of source reduction and are conducting surveys.
