A Bengaluru woman has filed a case of dowry harassment against her husband, Dr Govardhan, and a complaint of sexual intimidation against her father-in-law, Professor Nagaraju. The FIR was registered two years after her marriage, and the investigation is currently underway.
According to an NDTV report, Sangeeta and Dr Govardhan were married on November 2, 2023, with Sangeeta’s parents covering all wedding expenses, including jewellery and dowry, amounting to Rs 25 lakh. As noted in the FIR, the groom received various gold items and clothes, while Sangeeta was given gold, silver, and household utensils. After living with his parents for a week, the couple moved to a rented house near Uchangi, close to Dr Govardhan’s workplace.
Within 15 days of marriage, Dr Govardhan allegedly began pressuring Sangeeta to bring a share of her parents’ property and rental income, claiming it was necessary for her acceptance as his wife. Sangeeta stated that he routinely returned home late, avoided conversation, refused to eat meals she prepared, and told her she was not a suitable match.
She alleged that he married her expecting she would bring half of her parents’ property so he could quit his job and open a nursing home.
As per the NDTV, the FIR also contains allegations of sexual harassment by Sangeeta’s father-in-law, Professor Nagaraju, who is accused of making obscene comments, questioning the couple’s sexual life, and touching her inappropriately.

Sangeeta stated that when she reported this behaviour to her husband and mother-in-law, they dismissed her concerns and told her to “adjust.” She remained silent until she was preparing to visit her parents for a family ceremony, when Dr Govardhan allegedly demanded that she return with property documents and money.
