Namma Metro Updates: The authorities on Saturday stated that Namma Metro recorded its second-highest ridership on April 17, almost two months after it announced the fare hike by an average of 45 per cent. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials stated that while the number of passengers decreased for a few weeks, the commuters are again preferring the metro rides over other means of transport.
The BMRCL stated that a total of 9,08,153 passengers travelled by metro on April 17, adding that the majority of the commuters travelled on the Purple and Green Lines. While providing details, it stated that while a total of 4,35,516 passengers took the ride on the Purple Line, 2,85,240 passengers traveled on the Green Line. It further stated that a total of 1,87,397 riders chose to travel on the Majestic interchange station.

A senior BMRCL official stated that Namma Metro ridership has again picked up after it fell for a few weeks after the fare hike was announced. He further stated that the total ridership in April was 8.52 lakh, adding that the metro is still affordable and convenient for the commuters on the key routes.
The authorities stated that daily metro ridership dropped by about one lakh after the BMRCL decided to hike the fares by an average of 51.55 per cent before discounts and 41.7 per cent after discounts. It stated that the maximum hike was 71.42 per cent; the commuters protested against the decision by stating that the hike was unreasonable.

They also stated that the Namma Metro also does not offer multiple passes, making it tougher for the commuters. The authorities stated that the average daily ridership on weekdays ahead of the hike announcement was 8.5 lakh.
However, the authority has not shared the monthly ridership data since February. While announcing the hike, the BMRCL stated that the authority needed extra funds to expand its operations and continue the maintenance work.
