Bengaluru's Second Airport Update: In a major update for the second airport of Karnataka, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has reportedly raised several issues regarding the three sites proposed by the state government. The authority has raised several critical concerns regarding these locations in its recent pre-feasibility report. Earlier in April, the AAI had inspected the proposed sites, Chudahalli, Somanahalli, and Nelamangala; however, it did not approve any of the sites, citing multiple technical and logistic challenges.
While providing details, the authority stated that all the proposed sites are close to the Bannerghatta forest, adding that the flights are expected to face safety issues during the takeoff and landing, reported the Times of India. Apart from this, the AAI also asserted that the rocky landscape near Nelamangala would require extra efforts for the land-leveling, adding that the construction cost could increase significantly.

The report also emphasised that an agreement would be required between civil and defense aviation authorities, as all the proposed sites fall under the jurisdiction of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). While reacting to the report, Minister for Large and Medium Industries MB Patil stated that detailed studies will be conducted in the upcoming months before taking any final decision.
"Each location has its own pros and cons. We will conduct our own detailed technical and financial studies before making a final decision," Patil stated. The state government is soon likely to form a panel to make further plans and suggest the alternatives.
The second airport was proposed due to the excessive load at the Kempegowda International Airport, leading to traffic congestion in the key regions of the city. The state government had stated that the second airport will be built in the upcoming years to provide convenience to thousands of the passengers. Apart from improving the connectivity, the airport is also expected to boost the financial activities in the region.
