Dussehra Celebrations: In a bizarre and unexpected turn of events, a group of intoxicated youngsters set fire to a Ravan effigy early this morning in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

The organisers of the Ravan Dahan event, the main attraction of the Dussehra festivities were left shocked around 6 am when they discovered the effigy already engulfed in flames, hours ahead of the scheduled celebration meant for a large crowd.

A video from the site shows the effigy burning. In the background, the person filming can be heard saying, “They came in a red car and escaped in that direction. They were hanging around here earlier. There were some women with them. They were drunk and smoking. The car was new and had no number plate. Call the police.”

Now, the local organisers face a major challenge finding a replacement effigy in time for the evening ceremony.

Across India, Dussehra is marked by the symbolic burning of massive Ravan effigies, filled with firecrackers, to represent the triumph of good over evil.
