Two burglars allegedly gang-raped a woman on Monday after looting her ornaments at knifepoint in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the police said on Wednesday. Police detailed that two accused in connection with the incident have been detained and an investigation is ongoing.
Police said that the incident took place in the city's Maitri Vihar area at around 2 am on Monday when the woman was with her two-year-old daughter. There were no male members in the flat when the incident took place. Police suspect that the burglars might have entered the flats using the bamboo poles.
In her complaint, the woman has claimed that the burglars first looted her ornaments and mobile phone at knifepoint, and then they allegedly gang-raped her. They even threatened to kill her daughter if she shouted for help. The woman works for a private firm and shifted into the flat 10 days ago.
Police said that they are seeking clues from nearby surveillance footage due to the lack of CCTV cameras in the apartment.
Earlier this month, a woman in Odisha's Dhenkanal district was rescued by the state police after she was allegedly gang-raped for over seven months. Police added that four accused got arrested in the case, and police have launched a manhunt for three more suspects. The incident took place in Mahulapanji village near Dhenknal police station. The woman, who was poor and homeless, was living in a temporary shelter that lacked basic facilities.
