Bihar Crime News: Bihar is witnessing a disturbing surge in crime cases, with five people shot dead in public in just over a week across Patna and nearby districts. The murders, all carried out in broad daylight, have raised serious concerns over law and order in the state.
Businessman Gopal Khemka Shot Near Home In Patna
On July 4, businessman Gopal Khemka, a resident of the Gandhi Maidan locality in Patna, was gunned down just metres from his house. The incident occurred around 11:40 PM as he stepped out of his car. A CCTV camera captured a bike-borne assailant firing at Khemka before fleeing. One bullet and a cartridge were recovered from the scene. Khemka’s last rites were performed at Gulbi Ghat on Sunday, July 6.

Grocery Shop Owner Vikram Jha Killed in Ramkrishna Nagar
Exactly a week later, on July 11, Vikram Jha, a grocery shop owner in the Ramkrishna Nagar area of Patna, was shot dead by an unidentified attacker. The assailant fired at him in the evening and although he was rushed to the hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. The motive remains unknown and no arrests have been made so far.
Lawyer Jitendra Mahato Killed Near Police Station
The same day, Jitendra Kumar Mahato, a lawyer, was shot dead in daylight near the Sultanganj police station in Patna—barely 300 metres from the station. Mahato was returning home after having tea when he was attacked. He was taken to PMCH hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police officials, including Patna East SP Parichay Kumar, confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Veterinary Doctor Surendra Kumar Killed While Working In Field
On July 12, two more murders sent shockwaves through the state. In the morning, Surendra Kumar, a 50-year-old veterinary doctor and former BJP Kisan Morcha block president, was shot while irrigating his field in Sheikhpura village, Patna district. He was found unconscious with bullet injuries and rushed to AIIMS Patna, where he died during treatment. Police suspect political motives and are questioning locals for leads.

Businessman Puttu Khan Murdered In Sitamarhi Market
Later that day, in Sitamarhi district, Puttu Khan, a businessman, was shot dead in front of his shop in the busy Mehsoul Main Market. The murder led to public outrage, with angry locals protesting outside the hospital and refusing to allow a post-mortem. Residents accused the police of failing to control the crime wave and demanded strict action.
These consecutive murders have caused panic and anger among residents in Patna and nearby districts, mounting pressure on the Bihar police. Although multiple cases have been registered, most investigations are still ongoing, and authorities have made limited progress in identifying the culprits.
Police Encounter Kills Arms Supplier Vikas In Patna
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, police gunned down Vikas alias Raja, a wanted criminal involved in illegal arms manufacturing and trading. The encounter took place on Tuesday, July 9, around 2:45 AM in the Malsalami area near Damaiya Ghat in Patna. Police recovered a pistol, a bullet and a cartridge from the scene. His body was sent to Nalanda Medical College for autopsy. The development came hours after police arrested the main accused in the case, identified as Umesh, believed to be one of the shooters in the recent murders.
