Patna News: Patna Police have arrested the prime accused in the murder of prominent industrialist Gopal Khemka, who was shot dead outside his residence near Gandhi Maidan on Friday night. The accused shooter, identified as Umesh Kumar, was arrested from the Patna City area. Along with him, four other suspects have been detained from different locations, including Hajipur, Chowk and Malsalami police station limits.
According to officials, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to crack the case. Following the arrest, three teams are now conducting raids to trace the mastermind behind the murder and the person who aided the killer. Police had earlier questioned over a dozen suspects, comparing their appearances with CCTV footage of the crime scene. After thorough analysis, Umesh’s face matched with the shooter seen in the video.

The Jagran.com report cited sources as stating that, the SIT had been stationed in Patna City and Hajipur for two days as part of the operation. A motorcycle has also been recovered from the arrested shooter and police are now working to locate the scooter and pistol used during the killing based on his inputs.
Further investigation led the police to Beur Jail, where a team from the Special Task Force (STF) conducted raids on Saturday. They questioned five inmates, including a known criminal. During the raid, police seized three mobile phones with SIM cards and a slip of paper containing handwritten mobile numbers. Officials extracted the call detail records (CDRs) of these numbers and traced their last known locations, leading to vital clues.

Range Inspector General Jitendra Rana and SSP Kartikeya K Sharma are personally overseeing the interrogation of Umesh Kumar and other suspects. Police said the case may be officially cracked and details revealed by Tuesday.
The incident occurred late Friday night when Khemka returned from Bankipur Club and was waiting outside his residence gate near Kataruka Niwas. The shooter, who was reportedly waiting in the parking lot, approached on a scooter and shot him in the head, fleeing the spot in just six seconds via JP Golambar and JP Setu.
Authorities continue to search for the mastermind and accomplices involved in planning the murder.
