Amid growing concerns over petrol and diesel availability due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged people to reduce fuel consumption. The impact of this appeal may now extend to the Bihar government as well.
According to Jagran.com, the Bihar government is considering curbing the currently unlimited fuel supply provided to ministers for their official vehicles. While no formal order has been issued so far, ministers have reportedly been informed about the likely impact of the Prime Minister’s appeal.
Currently, ministers are entitled to an escort vehicle carrying security personnel. Along with the minister’s official car, two to three additional vehicles are generally allotted for private secretaries and other staff members. The government is now likely to reduce the number of vehicles assigned to personal staff.
Besides the Chief Minister, several other dignitaries are also given large motorcades comprising multiple vehicles. To cut fuel consumption, the government is considering limiting the size of these convoys. A final decision is expected after discussions with the police department.

The Bihar government is also reviewing the monthly fuel quota allotted to bureaucrats. The Uttar Pradesh government has already reduced the monthly petrol quota for special-category officers from 125 litres to 50 litres, while joint secretary-level officers now receive 50 litres instead of 100 litres per month. Bihar is reportedly examining this move closely.

How much fuel do officials get in Bihar?
Under the Bihar Ministers’ Allowances and Travel Rules, ministers using their personal vehicles are entitled to a vehicle allowance equivalent to 10 litres of petrol per day.
However, ministers using government vehicles currently face no restriction on fuel consumption and can use fuel as required for official duties.
Secretary-level officers in Bihar are allotted between 200 and 300 litres of petrol or diesel every month.
Field-level officers such as Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs), Block Development Officers (BDOs), and Circle Officers (COs) receive between 150 and 200 litres of petrol or diesel per month for official use.
