Jagran Correspondent, Ara: A major train accident occurred early Sunday morning at Ara Junction, under the Danapur Railway Division in Bihar when two coaches of the Mahananda Express, which runs from New Jalpaiguri to Katihar via Ara Junction to New Delhi, derailed.
The accident occurred at around 4:10 am. Preliminary information suggests that the two derailed bogies were from the general coach adjacent to the engine. Railway officials and technical personnel immediately arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Following the accident, train operations on the main Delhi-Howrah railway line have been affected.
The accident occurred on the up line near the western crossing of Ara railway station. The site is reported to be at kilometre 593, 9A.
The railway has initiated technical operations to remove the derailed coaches and restore normal train operations. Teams from relevant departments have arrived at the scene and are investigating the track and the derailed train.
The exact cause of the Mahananda Express derailment is not yet known. Rail operations are expected to return to full normality only after the track is repaired and the derailed carriages are removed. The Railways is issuing necessary guidelines regarding the operation of the affected trains.
Earlier in July, in a tragic rail accident in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, a passenger train collided with a school vehicle at a level crossing. Three students died on the spot, while five others sustained serious injuries. The accident took place near Karna Subarna railway station in the Eastern Railway network.
The accident occurred at a level crossing between Karnasubarna and Gobindapur railway stations under the jurisdiction of the Berhampore police station in Murshidabad district.
"The pool car, carrying the students to school, was crossing the rail lines at the level crossing gate near Karna Subarna station, about 48 km from Katwa, when the local train hit the vehicle," an Eastern Railway official told PTI.
As per railway officials, the level crossing gate was reported to be open when the accident occurred.
