The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday released its first list of 55 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls in Haryana. The saffron party has repeated the tickets of 21 sitting MLAs. This came a day after the party’s state unit handed over a comprehensive report on all the candidates and seats to the high command. Out of 55 candidates, there are four lawyers, five MBA graduates, 20 graduates, 10 who have completed 12th grade, two who have completed 10th grade, and one candidate who is an engineer.

BJP has fielded Rajya Sabha MP Krishan Lal Panwar from Israna Assembly constituency. Pawar lost to Congress’ Balbir Singh by a margin of 20,015 votes in the 2019 election. The party, however, repeated his ticket.

Arvind Sharma, who lost the Lok Sabha election from Rohtak, has been fielded by the party from Gohana this time. He had lost to Congress’ Deepender Hooda in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Sharma has been an independent MP from Sonipat and has also served as MP from Rohtak and Karnal. This will be the first instance when he will contest a state assembly election.

Meanwhile, former MP from Sirsa, Sunita Duggal, has been given the ticket from Ratia.

30-year-old Deepak Hooda, an international kabaddi player fielded from Maham, is the youngest contestant. The oldest candidate is Ramkumar Gautam, the MLA from Narnaund, at 78 years old. Gautam recently switched sides by abandoning JJP.

As many as 12 candidates of the saffron party are between the ages of 56 and 70. Three candidates are under 35 years of age and eight candidates are over 70 years old.

In the BJP's first list, the most educated candidate is Captain Abhimanyu, who has a management degree, LLB, and MBA from Harvard University. Dr Kamal Gupta, the candidate from Hisar and the state health minister, holds a Master's in Surgery.

JJP Turncoat and former minister Devender Singh Babli managed to get a BJP ticket within 30 hours of joining the party. He has been fielded from Tohana. Sunil Sangwan, who resigned from the post of jail superintendent, also bagged a ticket within 24 hours of joining the party. He has been fielded from Charkhi Dadri.

The elections in Haryana will be held in a single phase on October 5, and the counting of votes will happen on October 8.
