The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has kick-started a massive organisational overhaul with the election of its state unit chiefs. The exercise will follow the election of the saffron party’s national president. In the bid, N Ramchander Rao was on Tuesday elected as the BJP’s Telangana unit chief. He succeeded Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, who is a Union Minister in the Modi government.
Besides, Senior BJP leader PVN Madhav took over as the party's Andhra Pradesh unit president, succeeding D Purandeswari. His appointment was clear as he was the only candidate to file a nomination for this post.
In Uttarakhand, BJP Rajya Sabha MP and current state president of the party, Mahendra Bhatt, has once again been elected as the BJP Uttarakhand President. His name was announced in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra.
As per the BJP’s constitution, the party should elect chiefs in at least 19 out of 37 of its organisational states before the election of the party president. The saffron party is set to surpass this number today, as the decision on Maharashtra is likely to be made soon.
Earlier on Monday, V P Ramalingam and K Beichhua were elected BJP presidents of Puducherry and Mizoram, respectively.
After this, the BJP will elect chiefs in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.
JP Nadda, who is also the health minister in the Union Cabinet, has been helming the post of BJP chief since February 2020.
Though the tenure of a president is of three years, Nadda was given an extension due to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power for a third straight term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
With the BJP ardently holding organisational elections across the country, one can expect that the party is going to get a national president soon. PM Modi also held a deliberation with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to discuss the probable names for the top post in the BJP.
Several BJP leaders, including Dharmendra Pradhan, ML Khattar, Vinod Tawde and Shivraj Singh Chouhan are believed to be on top of the list to lead the party after Nadda.
