A massive political row has erupted after Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech on Tuesday. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, while reacting to Tharoor's comments, stated that she was not able to understand what the Congress MP liked in PM Modi's speech. The BJP leaders claimed that Tharoor was receiving backlash for praising the prime minister, adding that the Congress lacks democracy. The BJP also claimed the Congress issues "fatwas" to the leaders who keep national interest above familial interests. The Congress has maintained a distance from Tharoor's remarks multiple times in the past few months, especially during Operation Sindoor.

While criticising Congress leaders, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla claimed that the party issues "fatwa" to the leaders who prioritise the national interest. “If somebody praises the Prime Minister's speech, which is about larger issues, then a 'fatwa' is issued against that person by the Congress, which talks about democracy in the entire country, but there is no democracy within their party…,” Poonawalla stated.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate had stated that she did not find PM Modi's speech appealing, adding that the prime minister did not address the key issues. “I didn't find anything in the speech (of PM Modi) worth appreciating. I think PM must answer a lot of things,” Shrinate was quoted as saying by ANI. Earlier on Tuesday, Tharoor praised PM Modi for his speech on prioritising the nation's culture and heritage.

“PM Modi said he’d been accused of being in “election mode” all the time, but he was really in “emotional mode” to redress the problems of the people,” Tharoor stated in his post on X. "A significant part of the speech was dedicated to overturning Macaulay's 200-year legacy of "slave mentality." PM Modi appealed for a 10-year national mission to restore pride in India’s heritage, languages, and knowledge systems," the Congress MP highlighted.
