In a major reshuffle in Tamil Nadu, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to appoint senior leader and MLA Nainar Nagendran as the president of the party's state unit, replacing K. Annamalai.
As per the reports, the formal announcement of the appointment is likely to be made after the BJP's state executive committee meeting on Saturday. Nagendran is an MLA from Tirunelveli and is prominent Thevar community leader from his constituency.
His appointment is confirmed by the fact that he is the only leader who has filed a nomination for the state chief post. A senior party leader told The Indian Express, "Nainar will file the nomination today between 2 pm and 4 pm, and others may file on his behalf too. Necessary changes to the nomination and election process will be made within the party’s template rules, if required."
Nagendran is currently the state vice president was formerly associated with the AIADMK. If reports are to be believed, his name was endorsed by the outgoing party chief K Annamalai, Union Minister L Murugan, former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, and party MLA President Vanathi Srinivasan, the party said.
Other names that were in talks are Vanathi Srinivasan and Tamilisai Soundarajan. Soundarajan has served as the state unit chief earlier.
A couple of days earlier, Annamalai publicly said that he was not contesting to retain the top party post in the state. He said, "I am not in the contest for the new state chief," adding, that he would continue to serve as an ordinary cadre.
His exit is considered by many as not a demotion but a part of a calculated strategy needed for alliance with the AIADMK.
