Blood Moon 2025: Thousands of Indians took out their cameras and telescopes to witness the rare celestial phenomenon, which occurred on Sunday (September 7) for the second time this year. According to reports, it was last visible in March 2022.
The event was a rare spectacle and, as a result, was put on social media live by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics by turning all their telescopes located in Bengaluru, Ladakh, and Tamil Nadu towards the moon to check the progress of the blood moon.
The Blood Moon phenomenon started at 9:57 PM on September 7 and peaked at 11:48 PM. The entire event went on for nearly 82 minutes, making it longer than the one last witnessed in 2018.
What Is A Lunar Eclipse?
A lunar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon where the Earth comes directly between the sun and the moon, thereby casting its shadow on the surface of the moon. Unlike Solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye.

What Is A Blood Moon?
The Blood Moon phenomenon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the moon enters the inner part of the Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra. Some of the sunlight escapes the darkness cast by Earth’s shadow and is able to reach the surface of the moon, giving a tint of yellow and shades of red.
The colour that the moon acquires as a result of this celestial alignment is referred to as a Blood Moon.
