In a major bid to enhance road safety, the centre introduced a new law last Friday in the Lok Sabha under the Jan Vishwas Amendment Bill, 2026. According to the bill, if someone violates traffic laws, there will be a 3-month suspension of the driver's license and a maximum fine of Rs 10,000.
Currently, if you violate traffic rules while driving, the only penalty is a fine, which costs between Rs 50 and Rs 2000.

If someone violates air pollution regulations or does not possess a valid pollution certificate, they will also incur a fine and may be subject to a license suspension of up to 3 months.
According to senior traffic police officials, no one has ever been suspended for air pollution violations, but new legislation is now making these penalties a reality. These changes will apply nationally and are due to the central government implementing a system to improve public trust in government agencies.
The purpose of this bill is to consolidate 717 laws from several ministries and departments into one piece of legislation, which will simplify things for both individuals and businesses.
As one example of the amendments to this law, people who violate electrical regulations will no longer face punitive penalties; instead, they will be subject to paying a fine.
The amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act will also implement new rules for issuing driving licenses. From now on, if someone has an expired driver's license, it will remain valid for another 30 days after the expiration date.
