Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Sunday reinstated her nephew Akash Anand as both her political heir and the party’s national coordinator weeks after a setback in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. According to BSP’s national general secretary Mevalal Gautam, the decision was taken at a meeting held in Lucknow to review the party's poor performance in the 2024 general elections.

Earlier in May this year, Mayawati removed Anand from the post of national coordinator and as her successor. Announcing her decision, Mayawati said that her nephew was being removed from the posts till he attained political maturity. However, the BSF chief did not specify any reason to remove Anand from the posts.

Despite being sacked from the party back in May, Akash Anand had extended his support to Mayawati saying, "BSP chief Mayawati, you are ideal for the entire Bahujan Samaj, crores of countrymen worship you. It is because of your (Mayawati) struggles that today our society has such political strength, due to which the Bahujan community has learned to live with respect. You are our universally accepted leader. Your wish is my command. I will continue to fight for the Bhim Mission and my society till my last breath".
Anand was removed from the post soon after he was booked by the Sitapur Police in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly promoting hatred and enmity, among other offences under the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act. This came after Ananad in an election rally called BJP a ‘government of traitors’.
In the recently concluded Lok Sabha Election 2024, the BSP witnessed a significant dip in its political presence in Uttar Pradesh. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Election 2024, the party secured 10 seats, but in the 2024 general elections, the party failed to win even a single seat.
