As the tenure of the current Central Bureau of Investigation's Director Praveen Sood, is about to end on May 24, 2026, the process for the appointment of the next chief has gained attention. A high-level committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet on Tuesday for finalising the person who will head the country's top investigative agency.

The committee comprises PM Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant. According to reports, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has almost finalised the list of senior IPS officers who will be there before the panel.

Sood, who is a 1986-batch Karnataka cadre IPS officer, took charge as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation on May 24, 2023. Under the guidelines of the Supreme Court, the CBI Director enjoys a fixed tenure of two years to ensure institutional independence and continuity in investigations.

However, administrative circles have not entirely ruled out the possibility of an extension for Sood. Officials noted that in the past, the government has extended the tenure of incumbent CBI chiefs when the high-powered committee failed to arrive at a consensus on a successor.

According to reports, several senior IPS officers are being discussed prominently for the top CBI post. These are:

Parag Jain

Parag Jain is a 1989-batch Punjab cadre IPS officer, currently serving as chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Known for his intelligence and security background, Jain is considered one of the most experienced officers in the national security establishment. He has been appreciated for his extensive experience in intelligence operations and strategic security management.

Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor

Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, a 1990-batch Haryana cadre IPS officer, is presently holding the role of Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Prior to heading the central armed police force, Kapoor served as Director General of police of Haryana.A prior engineering graduate, Kapoor has held several important policing and administrative assignments during his career. He is regarded as an officer with deep experience in law and order management, intelligence coordination, and police modernisation initiatives.

GP Singh

GP Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer presently serving as Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), is also among the senior officers under consideration.Singh is particularly known for his impressive leadership in internal security matters. He is mostly appreciated for handling security challenges, and leading one of India’s largest paramilitary forces has added weight to his candidacy.

Yogesh Gupta

Yogesh Gupta, a 1993-batch Kerala cadre IPS officer, is the Director General of Police for Fire and Rescue Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards in Kerala. He holds a forte in solving financial crimes. He is significantly known for his "TRACK MODEL" for investigative analysis.

Why Is The Post Important?

The Director of the CBI is one of the most influential and sensitive posts in India's administrative framework. The Director is responsible for making major decisions of the agency.

They have the final say on whether to file a charge sheet or close a case, making their role pivotal in high-profile political scandals, financial frauds, and complex criminal matters.

The two-year tenure can be extended up to five years through annual renewals, as per recent amendments. He leads the fight against corruption involving central government employees and public sector units. The CBI Acts as the nodal agency for Interpol in India, coordinating with global law enforcement.

The central agency investigates major breaches of fiscal laws, such as large-scale bank frauds and income tax violations. Courts often transfer sensitive local cases to the CBI, placing immense trust in the Director to maintain the agency’s credibility.
