Bengal News: An accused of raping and killing a teenage girl was killed in a police encounter in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district early Tuesday. The police took action as Prahlad Das, the main accused, shot a policeman and tried to flee during the recreation of the scene in the Gaighata region. This comes months after Prabhas Mondal, the key accused in the Baruipur rape case, was also killed in a similar manner during the police action.
'Accused Opened Fire At Policeman'
The incident occurred when the police arrived at the crime scene in the early morning with the accused to recreate the scene, reported Jagran, citing police sources. The scene was located just four kilometers from the Bangladesh border. As the police began the recreation process, the accused allegedly snatched a gun from a policeman and opened a fire, leaving him badly injured.
The injured policeman also opened a fire in retaliation and self-defense, leaving the accused severely injured. He was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment; however, the doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Das was arrested earlier on Sunday after he was accused of raping and killing a 17-year-old girl.

The victim reportedly went to participate in a cultural event in her village on Saturday night. However, she disappeared after receiving a suspicious phone call at 11:30 pm. During the search operation, the state police recovered her dead body next morning in the region, sending a shockwave among the locals. Das was arrested on Sunday based on the family's statement and the initial probe.
Earlier in July, Prabhas Mandal, accused of gang-raping a minor in Baruipur, was killed in police firing during a similar midnight re-enactment. The Calcutta High Court is hearing the process, timing, and circumstances of the Baruipur encounter, and the court has ordered the preservation of CCTV footage.
