Tamil Nadu Tragedy:  In the wake of the tragic train-van collision in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore, the Indian Railways announced a set of safety measures to heighten vigilance and ensure safety at railway-level crossings. The Railways have planned to install CCTV cameras, redesign speed breakers and warning signage and regularly monitor protocol adherence. This move by the Indian Railways comes after a school bus carrying several students was hit by a train in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district, which claimed the lives of three students and left several injured.

Tamil Nadu Tragedy: New Safety Measures By Indian Railways

The new safety protocols by the Indian Railways include the installation of CCTV cameras with solar power backups at All Level Crossing Gates to enable real-time monitoring and evidence collection. The interlocking threshold—which allows automated gate operation—will be reduced from 20,000 to 10,000 Train Vehicle Units (TVU), ensuring more gates function with automated safety systems, especially at high-speed train routes.

Additionally, speed breakers and warning signs at the LC gates will be redesigned to ensure enhanced visibility and compliance. In a significant move, the Railways will also audit voice recording from two non-interlocked gates per division randomly to ensure protocol adherence.

Earlier, in Tamil Nadu’s train-bus collision incident, the gatekeeper was accused of opening the Railway Level Crossing while the train was approaching the crossing. The authorities have decided to deploy the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Home Guard Personnel at high-conflict Railway Level Crossings to ensure the protection of the gatekeepers.

The Railway Ministry announced plans to construct Road Over Bridges (ROBs), Road Under Bridges (RUBs), and Limited Height Subways (LHS) to reduce the risk of accidents at Railway Level Crossings.

These measures by the Indian Railway come along with a 15-day nationwide safety inspection drive focusing on LC gates in block sections to plug any procedural or infrastructural gaps.
