Woman and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi on Wednesday announced that the Centre is planning to double the duration for which domestic violence survivors can seek temporary shelter at One-Stop Centres (OSC) from five to 10 days. She stated that under special circumstances, survivors could stay for up to 15 days.
Presently, women facing violence, along with their children (girls of all ages and boys up to 8 years old), can access temporary shelter at OSCs for a maximum of five days. These centres provide support to women affected by violence in private and public spaces, including within families, workplaces and communities.
Annapurna Devi said the Women and Child Development Ministry is in the process of finalising the extension of shelter duration. For women needing long-term accommodation, OSCs coordinate with Swadhar Greh, which are managed by the government or NGOs, to provide continued support.
The union minister announced a dinner at her residence, where she hosted women panchayat leaders and sarpanchs from Jharkhand. These women were in Delhi to participate in International Women's Day celebrations, recognising their contributions to leadership and community development.
